Neo-soul icon singer Erykah Badu has always been know for being one step ahead when it comes to music and fashion so when the news first broke by Style.com that she will be the face of the Givenchy Spring/Summer 2014 collection, our first thoughts were what a powerful collaboration this will be!
The French fashion house’s creative director Riccardo Tisci spoke to Style.com calling her “an icon and one of the most stylish women he’s even met in his life.” Tisci said he had Badu in mind while working on the collection, which will feature a mash-up of African and Japanese influences. With the fashion industry facing criticism for the lack of diversity on the runway, Tisci opened up about that with Style.com saying:
“There was a lot of talk this season in fashion about designers not promoting diversity. I was one of the persons who ended up not being touched by this. I discovered Joan Smalls, I discovered Maria [Borges]. I discovered a lot of black girls and I have always been supporting them.”
The first two images from the campaign were unveiled on Givenchy’s instagram. The black and white image photographed by Mert & Marcus features Badu in a sleeveless and neckless poncho modelling a short do, which happens to be one of our many looks that she has that we love. The second image shows the queen in a striped long dress.
Do you think this collaboration could be a step towards a more diverse environment with luxury brands?
